"I understand art as a process of reconnection."

I work across theatre, film, and installation – interweaving
documentation and fiction, personal story and collective resonance. My work explores the relationship
between the personal and the political and the need for connection,
especially in moments of rupture or transition.

In recent years, experiences of illness/healing, death/grief and caregiving have transformed
my understanding of art and life. I am curious about developing an artistic practice as a space of holding
for reconnection to oneself, to others, and to earth.

My language is shaped by the unconscious, by play and critical inquiry.
I am drawn to thresholds — between life and death, stillness and movement, isolation and relation — and to processes that honour these in-between states.
Living between cultures and languages, I carry a transnational sensibility, attentive to the shifting grounds of belonging in a global society.

My projects often evolve through collaboration with communities, experts, and intensive research,
making interdisciplinarity – and the integration of different perspectives from fields such as science, activism, and care – vital to expanding my artistic language, challenging narratives, and deepening form.

Rather than offering answers, I create spaces for the ongoing question of how we might,
with unconfirmed coordinates, navigate this whole being alive thing.

Anastasija Harrowna Bräuniger (German/Russian) is a film and theatre director and actor. She works at the intersection of documentation and fiction, instinctively seeking interdisciplinarity and transnationality.

After completing her acting studies at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock she worked at Theater Heilbronn, while creating own artistic projects in and outside the theatre. 2016 she continued her studies and pursued a directing degree at Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch Berlin – while founding FLUGWERK e.V., a workshop stage for process oriented artistic work and open rehearsals.

Anastasija continuously works in social contexts and created two short films in collaboration with children affected by forced displacement in Iraqi Kurdistan and Lebanon.

In 2020, she won the Emerging Directors Competition at Theater Erlangen for PROTEST4, developed with activists from Hong Kong, Chile and Lebanon. In 2021, she presented her diploma project Heterotopie Moria which highlights human rights violations at the EU’s external borders and discusses EU asylum policies. In 2022/2023, she received the Elsa-Neumann-Scholarship and a Fellowship from the International Theatre Institut (ITI Academy). In 2024 she was invited to the International Forum of Theatertreffen Berlin.

Anastasija won several awards for her work as an actor on stage and in TV/film (Proskenion Nachwuchförderpreis für Darstellende Künste, Best Supporting Actress at Die Seriale) and for her work as a film and theatre director (see awards below).

She directs at various municipal theatres and the liberals arts scene. Currently she is working on two film projects and a auto-fictional monologue performance.

Anastasija lives in Rome and Berlin.
