"I understand art as a process of reconnection."
My work explores the relationship between the personal and the collective, and I keep returning to the question of how connection becomes possible — especially in moments of rupture, transition or disorientation.
My process is guided by the subconscious, by play and ritual, by humour and critical inquiry. I create experiences that are participatory, multiperspective or perspective-shifting, and visually and emotionally strong.
Experiences of illness, healing, death, loss, grief and caregiving have reshaped how I understand art. I am increasingly drawn to working with plant medicine and to better understand the relationship between humans and nature, and the role art can play within it.
Living across languages and cultures has given me a transnational sensibility and an awareness of shifting forms of belonging in a global society. My projects grow interdisciplinarily through collaboration with communities and experts from fields such as science, politics, activism and care.
I focus on creating contexts where questions can stay open for deeper exploration without fear. Much of my work begins in a simple uncertainty: how to navigate together without assuming the coordinates are fixed.
Anastasija Harrowna Bräuniger (German/Russian) is a film and theatre director and actor. She works at the intersection of documentation and fiction, instinctively seeking interdisciplinarity and transnationality.
After completing her acting studies at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock she worked at Theater Heilbronn, while creating own artistic projects in and outside the theatre. 2016 she continued her studies and pursued a directing degree at Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch Berlin – while founding FLUGWERK e.V., a workshop stage for process oriented artistic work and open rehearsals.
Anastasija continuously works in social contexts and created two short films in collaboration with children affected by forced displacement in Iraqi Kurdistan and Lebanon.
In 2020, she won the Emerging Directors Competition at Theater Erlangen for PROTEST4, developed with activists from Hong Kong, Chile and Lebanon. In 2021, she presented her diploma project Heterotopie Moria which highlights human rights violations at the EU’s external borders and discusses EU asylum policies. In 2022/2023, she received the Elsa-Neumann-Scholarship and a Fellowship from the International Theatre Institut (ITI Academy). In 2024 she was invited to the International Forum of Theatertreffen Berlin.
Anastasija won several awards for her work as an actor on stage and in TV/film (Proskenion Nachwuchförderpreis für Darstellende Künste, Best Supporting Actress at Die Seriale) and for her work as a film and theatre director (see awards below).
She directs at various municipal theatres and the liberals arts scene. Currently she is working on two film projects and a auto-fictional monologue performance.
Anastasija lives in Rome and Berlin.
