VOYAGER
participatory installation
2023 | open end | 55 languages

Theater der Welt Festival / Museum Angewandte Kunst
showing 11.07. / 13.07.23
concept by Anastasija Bräuniger and Linus Lutz

116 images, greetings in 55 languages, natural sounds, and 90 minutes of music – this is the content stored on the Golden Records that NASA launched into space in 1977 aboard the interstellar probes Voyager I and II. Their mission: to offer extraterrestrial intelligence a glimpse of Earth and its cultures.

Which sounds and images were chosen to represent humanity – and which were left out? Whose voices manifest on the records? And what picture of Earth would they convey to potential interpreters – wether extraterrestrial or human?

If the space probes are ever discovered, it could be in a distant future where humanity, as we know it, no longer exists.

The audiovisual installation VOYAGER invites audiences to pause and reflect – and to contribute their own ideas about what we should send into the vastness of space to represent us.
